Elections

Elections May 2018

This page explains where the elections are being held in May 2018 and also explains more about the election process.

There are four principal types of district-level subdivision in the UK. There are 326 districts in total, made up of:

Metropolitan boroughs (36)

Unitary authorities (55)

Non-metropolitan districts (201)

London boroughs (32)

Each of the above Districts are split up into Wards. Each Ward elects several Councillors. There is some variation between the Districts, but by way of explanation, let’s use Southampton as an example:

Southampton it is a Unitary Authority and has 16 Wards (Freemantle being one). Within each Ward there are three Councillor positions – hence there are a total of 48 elected councillors in Southampton. In May 2018, there will be an election in each of the 16 Wards, with one Councillor position up for election in each (i.e. 16 elections). In the Freemantle Ward, the position up for election in May 2018 is currently held by Jeremy Moulton (Con). Councillors are elected for four years (with Southampton holding council elections in every three out of every 4 years – there were no elections in 2017, with 2021 being the next election-free year).

There are around 11,500 people registered to vote in the Freemantle Ward. Around 33% of the electorate usually vote and the winning candidate usually gets around 1400 votes.

Howevever, there is currently lots of activity taking place in London to fight Brexit and Viva Europa does not intend to fight London Borough seats.
